The story so far...
Taos
Sunflower opened in September 2002 in a 100 sq. ft.
room located next to my home in the mountains north
of Taos, New Mexico. Conceived and opened in a scant
two months, I had few flight plans...I hoped to make
enough money to pay the bills (the dreamer), offer
some yarns and tools not otherwise available in our
immediate area, and most importantly, make healthy
contributions to research for a cure for breast cancer,
in the memory of my sister Vicki and her daughter,
Kathleen.
Little
did I know how my life would change! From the first
day until the present I have been meeting the most
wonderful and talented people. A monthly knitting
group promptly formed, as well as many friendships.
By the end of 2002, planning for winter knitting classes
was underway and a substantial contribution to breast
cancer research was made. Taos Sunflower was off and
running!
By
spring, I knew the shop had outgrown its space at
home. By April, a new location was found...a wonderful
territorial style building (reminiscent of a one room
school house) in nearby Arroyo Seco, a scant 10 minutes
north of Taos on the road to Taos Ski Valley. Two
months of planning, ordering, agonizing, and just
plain having too much fun, and the doors opened for
business on June 28, 2003. We haven't looked back.
By
winter 2005, we had outgrown our wonderful little
territorial. Luckily, we were able to move just next
door, into the wonderfully restored adobe building
that dates back to the founding of Arroyo Seco in
the early 1800s. We now proudly offer 1,200 sq ft
of retail in the main space, with an adjoining classroom
and additional retail space totaling another 750 sq
ft. Our new space offers more room for shoppers, more
yarn, and a seating area near the book department
that invites you to bring your knitting, your latte
from Gypsy 360 next door, and spend some time with
us.
My
heartfelt thanks to all of you who supported this
adventure in its embryonic stage, giving me the love
and support and encouragement it took to make this
a success. I couldnt have done it without you.
Special
thanks to Tracy Turner, my incredibly talented friend
who created our logo from one dead sunflower from
my garden.
